FORSYTH, GA, July 31, 2025 — The Monroe County Board of Commissioners is excited to announce that it has officially received an additional $5 million in state funding to assist with road resurfacing in Monroe County.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has graciously directed $5 million in local road infrastructure funds to Monroe County to be used for several projects throughout the county, including the upcoming widening and resurfacing of Rumble Road in preparation for three major projects coming to I-75 Exit 181. These include: a new Buc-ee’s convenience store, the Rumble Technology Campus data center, and a new Oglethorpe Power natural gas-fired plant. Besides Rumble Road, the additional funding will be used for road improvements on Estes Road, Montpelier Road, and Thornton Road. The funding was made available through the Georgia Department of Transportation’s State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA).
The Monroe County Board of Commissioners wishes to thank Gov. Kemp for his continued commitment to ensuring that Georgia’s counties have the resources to thrive in an ever-changing economic climate.
The Board of Commissioners are also particularly thankful to our own District 18 Sen. John Kennedy, who worked tirelessly in his efforts to ensure that a portion of the state’s local road infrastructure funds was allocated for Sen. Kennedy’s home Monroe County.
Sen. Kennedy said of the major projects coming to Monroe County: “Bringing high-paying jobs and new industry will empower Middle Georgians to achieve the American Dream regardless of their ‘Zip Code.’”
Sen. Kennedy added that he was “proud to secure the funding for the supporting infrastructure that will serve as a catalyst for future economic development.”
“I want to thank Gov. Kemp, Commissioner McMurry, and the Monroe County Board of Commissioners for their dedication and leadership in bringing these meaningful projects to Monroe County,” said Sen. Kennedy.
The Board of Commissioners also appreciates the work of Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Commissioner Russell McMurry, who studied Monroe County’s road infrastructure and future needs and determined that Monroe County would be an appropriate place to maximize the state’s fiscal resources.
Monroe County District 1 Commissioner Lamarcus Davis, who began petitioning state leaders for funding assistance beginning in late 2024 when the major Rumble Road projects were announced, extended his “sincere appreciation” to Gov. Kemp and the Governor’s Office, Sen. Kennedy and his staff, and Commissioner McMurry and the GDOT office for the additional road funding.
“This additional $5 million will allow much needed infrastructure improvements to the rapidly expanding Rumble Road/I-75 interchange in addition to safety improvements to school corridors while also allowing Monroe County to maximize its TSPLOST program,” Commissioner Davis said. “Without this additional funding, these much-needed projects would not be able to be constructed in a timely manner appropriate to meet the needs of the County’s growth.”
Commissioner Davis continued, “We are most grateful for the cooperation and vision these leaders have shown in making this investment into our County. These projects not only improve our local community but also reflect state leaders’ commitment to serving the needs of rural Georgia. We can assure our citizens that this funding will be utilized in a way both they and visitors to our great County will be proud.”
